a man with the misfortune of being born to a socialite mother who was into kira kira names

he used to use suwa as a nickname when he was growing up because it was preferable to using his full name. when he legally changed his name to JUST be suwa, he purposefully chose a different spelling: 斯波. this spelling is typically used for family names, and this causes some confusion for others as to whether or not it's his first name or his last name. he plays into this because it gives him a sense of ✨cool mystery✨, but also... mostly it just makes it harder for people to find out his old name. which used to be spelled using the more typical kanji when used as a man's first name: 和人. because... the spelling of his full name was 和人技娜屡努. read as 'suwaginarudo'. aka. swaginald. yes. it's that bad. 和 to calm, 人 person, 技 art/skill/craft, 娜 beautiful, 屡 often, 努 endeavor/make effort. essentially, 'a calming person whose beauty will inspire others to endeavor to create art often'.

has attachment issues due to his mother essentially treating him like an accessory. struggles to form/maintain relationships with others due a combination of these attachment issues, having been mocked relentlessly as a child for his name (and mocked less relentlessly for his freckles and glasses), and his personality flaws. namely: he's extremely inconsistent and unstable, flipping moods and goals and disposition quite quickly which makes him hard to read and get to know.

changed his name as soon as he was legally able and cut contact with his mother once he started attending college to start completely fresh. dyed his hair, switched to contacts, and got into fashion - which he'd avoided at all costs growing up because of his mother - for the sake of appearing cooler and standing out. he's majoring in sociology at a liberal arts school but doesn't have any specific career goals and is mostly just there for the experience.

desperately desires connection and wants more than anything to be liked for who he is, but he himself is unsure of who he really is and wants to find the answer by any means necessary. tends to perpetuate the cycle of treating himself as an accessory to whoever he's talking to at the moment unconsciously due to this desire and adjusts his interests and demeanor according to what he thinks they want most of him.

plays around a lot but has never had a real relationship. all bark and no bite in the realm of love. he's great at acting confident but he gets flustered as soon as anyone calls him out on his bluffing and inexperience.

his core immutable personality traits are that he's exceedingly adaptable and resilient, bubbly and silly but VERY easily gets depressed at the slightest hint of rejection, charismatic and sociable on a surface level but incredibly secretive and closed-off in regards to himself, indecisive and neurotic, quite responsible and self-sufficient but has little in the way of real world experience, ultimately a genuinely compassionate and kind-hearted guy but his people pleasing and need to be liked can be so over-the-top that he seems phony and this puts others off under the assumption that he's using them for something (which - to be fair - he is, but that something is 'being understood').

fashion (convinced himself that keeping up with trends was his ticket to being perceived as cool but then became genuinely interested. doesn't have the budget to buy the latest styles now that he's estranged from his mother though, so he upcycles old and thrifted pieces often)

strawberry flavored things (the more sickly sweet and artificial, the better)

sunflowers (wants to be like them)

the colors yellow & green (because they remind him of sunflowers)

instrumental prog rock (aspires to learn guitar because he thinks guitar players are cool but has never even picked up the instrument)

bread (in general. just. all bread. will fuck up a loaf or flatbread of any kind.)

oversized shirts, hoodies, & sweaters (has trouble gaining muscle mass and is self-conscious of his lanky frame so he likes that they make him look more bulky)

sneakers (not a sneakerhead but appreciates a good shoe)

dogs (does he relate...?)

ball pythons (is.... is it because they have puppy faces....????)

mocha lattes (he likes and needs caffeine but thinks unflavored coffee is too bitter)

cool weather (not to the point of ice or snow, but any excuse to wear a sweater is a good one in his book)

collects buttons (not pin badges, but fastening buttons. goes to local thrift stores monthly to browse through clothes and rumage through bins of bits and bobs and hoards any neat looking buttons he finds)

very good at sudoku. (no reason for this he just spent a lot of time doing sudoku as a kid and got good at it)

extreme lightweight (gets buzzed after a few sips of anything stronger than a beer)

in school on a scholarship (lives in a dorm; works part time at a convenience store to pay for his food & other living expenses)

has pretty gnarly insomnia (usually just pops a melatonin, puts on some white noise, and hopes for the best)

takes particularly good care of his skin (got into the habit after dealing with acne from using coverup as a teenager)

pretty severely nearsighted (can barely see a foot in front of him with any clarity. used to wear glasses as a kid but switched to contacts once he left for college and has never looked back)

his guilty pleasures are shitty, hallmark-tier romance movies and medical soap operas (he thinks sappy fated romances are touching and comforting and he loves getting invested in the human drama of it all with no real-life stakes)
